Harvard Gazette

The Neuroimaging of Coma and Consciousness lab recently discussed advances in defining and detecting consciousness, as covered in the Harvard Gazette.

Principal Investigator Dr. Brian Edlow discusses the clinical importance of assessing consciousness in environments like the neurointensive care unit.  Dr. Yelena Bodien describes their 2024 New England Journal of Medicine article detailing that many patients who had been described as unconsciousness due to behavioral assessments actually demonstrated consciousness via fMRI. Finally, Dr. Michael Young delves into the deep philosophical questions when considering how to evaluate consciousness and use these evaluations to make clinical decisions.
